Council Members David Yates (D-25) and Rick Blackwell (D-12) invite the community to the first-ever Family Movie Night at the Southwest YMCA this coming Friday, May 11th. It’s a free event for the entire family.
“The Southwest YMCA is a wonderful amenity for our community. Councilman Blackwell and I sponsor these great events to ensure every family in our community can have some fun in a safe and comfortable atmosphere,” said Yates. “Family Movie Night is a new event this year. I am sure we will have a great turnout just like our Back to School Bash and Fall Family Festival!”
“Families can enjoy a free night together in a fun and safe environment with this event,” says Blackwell. “The Southwest YMCA does a tremendous job of offering family-friendly events for our community and we are excited to offer something different this year.”

Bring your blankets and chairs to enjoy the feature film “Zootopia” beginning at 8 pm. This Disney animated film released in 2016 tells the story of a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox working together to uncover a conspiracy. The Southwest YMCA is located at 2800 Fordhaven Road.

Councilwoman Marianne Butler is once again encouraging pet owners to take advantage of the next S.P.O.T. Clinic for residents of District 15 set for Saturday, May 12th.
“S.P.O.T. Clinics are an effective way to provide needed veterinarian services at a low cost for pet owners,” says Butler. “If you have not had time during the week to take care of your pet, this clinic is one way to renew a license and update vaccinations.”

The S.P.O.T Clinic (which stands for Stop Pet Overpopulation Today) will be located in the front parking lot at the Salvation Army building, 1010 Beecher Street. The hours of operation are from 9:00am until 12:00pm.

Councilwoman Marianne Butler (D-15) is sponsoring Breast Cancer Screenings and Mammograms for Women 40 years an older on Saturday, May 12th.
“Early detection of breast cancer is one of the best ways to fight this disease. It is my hope that women over 40 will take advantage of this event. Many of us know of someone who has lost a love one because of breast cancer,” says Butler.
The Breast Cancer / Mammography Screenings are for the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 3509 Taylor Blvd.
Councilwoman Butler is partnering with Horses and Hope, The University of Louisville Hospital, the James Graham Brown Cancer Center and the Kentucky Cancer Program.
The Mammograms are for women age 40 and older. There is no cost to program eligible women without insurance. Insurance will be filed for women with coverage. Appointments are required for the screening.

Councilman Bill Hollander invites the community to attend a D9 Community Conversation on Louisville’s budget.
The meeting is Monday, April 30, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, 2115 Lexington Road.
“Mayor Fischer will be presenting his proposed budget on April 26 and the Council’s Budget Committee, which I chair, will spend the next two months working on it,” says Hollander. “As that process begins, I’ll have some comments on the proposal at our D9 meeting but mainly I want to hear from Louisville residents about their views on how we should be spending their money.”
As with all D9 Community Conversations, discussion of any other subject is also welcome and Councilman Hollander will be available to talk with constituents about any questions, comments or concerns.

Members of the Louisville Metro Council will host a formal reception to congratulate and welcome Dr. Marty Pollio as the new Superintendent of the Jefferson County Public Schools on Monday, April 23rd.
“This is an opportunity for Council members to meet with Dr. Pollio as we look forward to working with him and assisting anyway we can in educating the children of Jefferson County,” says President David James (D-6). “I support Dr. Pollio and the dynamic changes he is making for JCPS to improve education in Jefferson County.”
The formal reception will be held in the First Floor Conference Room of Historic City Hall, 601 West Jefferson Street beginning at 5:30pm.
Scarlet’s Bakery, an organization which works with victims of human trafficking and domestic abuse, will provide the appetizers for the reception.

The third time is the charm and the forecast shows this Saturday will be good weather for the postponed Spring Cleanups in and around District 6.
“I want to thank everyone for their patience. It appears the weather is on our side this Saturday so I am asking everyone to come out and join us as we make District 6 a better, cleaner place for everyone,” says President James. “We are fortunate to always have great volunteers for these events and I am hopeful everyone will help us out.”
Volunteers need to show up at 12:00pm for the cleanup which is scheduled to last through 3:00pm.
There are three areas set for a cleanup this Saturday. One is Dumesnil between 17th and 18th Streets; the second is at West Ormsby between the 1500 and 1800 blocks and finally the California neighborhood. . Volunteers should meet at the corner of 18th and Dumesnil and then the cleanups will begin.
There will be a limited number of shovels, rakes and brooms, gloves and bags. If any volunteers have their own yard equipment please bring it with you.
“So if you have the time, come join us and have some fun and help us make a difference in our community,” says President James.

Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton is encouraging residents to come out to the District 5 Community Meeting on April 24th to talk with representatives of Louisville Metro Government if there are issues or concerns they would like to have addressed.
“I have invited various representatives and agencies to come and make themselves available to anyone who has a question about an issue or would like to know more about a program we offer in Metro Government,” says Hamilton
The District 5 Community Meeting is set for the Shawnee Golf Course Clubhouse, 460 Northwestern Parkway beginning at 6:00pm.
Among the departments invited; LMPD, MSD, Codes and Regulations, Metro Public Works and Assets, Metro Parks and Recreation, Vacant and Public Properties, Community Services, Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods, and a representative from the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office.
“I know for some, it is not easy to take off from work and come downtown to speak with someone in Metro Government. At this community meeting, we have brought Metro Government to one place. No appointments are necessary, just come in and talk,” says Hamilton. “Government works best when we know what is on your mind and how we can handle it together.”
