Jeffersontown Police announced today that they believe Juan Carlos Ortega-Santos is an illegal immigrant. Earlier today, Ortega-Santos entered a plea of not guilty in the deaths of two minors Tuesday night.  According Jeffersontown Police Chief, Ken Hatmaker, believes Ortega-Santos is a flight risk and that federal authorities have placed a detainer on him.

Ortega-Santos was employed at Wild Eggs and the restaurant released a statement saying that the Ortega-Santos had all of the proper documentation when he was hired.

Ortega-Santos is being charged with murder, driving under the influence, assault, wanton endangerment, driving without a license, and failure to have insurance after hitting two pedestrians.

SkillsUSA, a national competition for high school students in technical and career programs, will be leaving Louisville at the end of its contract in 2020. The convention is estimated to bring about 20,000 people into the area.

One of the reasons that the convention will be leaving is because lack of hotel rooms near the Exposition Center. This is the second convention in about the past year that has announced plans to leave Louisville due to lack of hotel rooms near the Exposition Center.

Last night, police arrested Juan Carlos Ortega-Santos, 26 years old, for the deaths of two pedestrians on Taylorsville Road. He is being charged with two counts of murder, one count of first degree assault, one count of first degree wanton endangerment, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, driving without a license and failure to maintain insurance.

Police have determined that Ortega-Santos had gone into the bicycle lane, where four youths were walking.  Two of the four children were hit: 10 year old Alena Clay was pronounced dead at the scene and 16 year old Tyeisha Lacy died at Kosair Children’s Hospital. One of the other children suffered some injuries and has been treated at the Children’s Hospital.

Ortega-Santos was taken to Baptist Health Louisville and had blood drawn for an alcohol test. He blood alcohol content was 0.200, which is more than two times the legal limit. Ortega-Santos is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow.

Kentucky State FairThe KY State Fair is now looking for entries into the thousands of categories of competitions for the fair, which starts August 18th.

The general deadline for all categories, which is fast approaching, is July 1st. Entries must be postmarked by July 1. Late entries will be accepted until July 11th for a late fee. Other deadlines: July 11th for open and youth livestock, July 18th for pigeon, poultry and rabbits, July 25th for late entries for open livestock for a late fee, and August 3rd is final late entry deadline for open livestock for an additional late fee.

Entries can be printed and mailed or faxed. You can also submit an entry online by visiting the KY State Fair website. For more information about the entry process, please call 502-367-5190.

Earlier today, the Muhammad Ali Center announced that the UPS Foundation has gifted then center $500,000. The money will be used to fund education initiatives and the Council of Students.

Some of the programs that will receive funding are:

  • UCrew – a program that helps students develop the necessary skills and tools needed to start a small enterprise, and to generate profits that can be used to address social issues, such as poverty.
  • Generation Ali – a program that is guided by the six principles that Ali followed. The program is also designed to help students become leaders and understand how to fight for a cause.
  • Creating Out Future – designed for middle and high school young adults to understand the six principles of Ali’s life and how to use them in their future planning.
  • Council of Students – a program for students who participate in service work to help them develop skills, such as how to work in projects and develop leadership.

Help Needed In Animal Abuse Case

Louisville Metro Animal Services is asking for help in finding the person who abused a small, Pomeranian mix dog. The dog was found near 34th St. and Larkwood Ave.

The abuser put a rubber band around the dog’s snout and one of the front paws. The band on the nose had cut deep enough into the flesh to expose bone.
