Tickets start at $22.50, reserved seating, fees apply. VIP Packages are available at $110, including premium seating and post-show Meet and Greet with photo opportunity.

Gov. Matt Bevin has designated four non-voting, non-member advisors to the Kentucky Board of Education per his executive order signed on Friday. The non-voting, non-member advisors are:

  • Tracey Cusick, a parent of 10 children, engaged in community and education organizations, from Union, Ky. Cusick has an associate’s of applied science degree from the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse.
  • Kathy Gornik, co-founder and president of THIEL Audio, and chairman of Newton’s Attic, a non-profit educational organization focused on inspiring young people to pursue engineering, robotics and physics. Gornik holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Dayton.
  • Wayne Lewis, an associate professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Kentucky, and the executive director of education policy and programs for the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet. Lewis holds a bachelor’s from Loyola University New Orleans, master’s degree from the University of Akron, teaching certificate from the University of New Orleans, and a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University.
  • Joe Papalia, an entrepreneur and executive with broad engineering, manufacturing and sales experience, from Louisville, Ky. Papalia holds a bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Gov. Matt Bevin has made the following appointments to the Education Professional Standards Board:

  • Rachel Colyer, Lexington, represents middle school teachers. She is a teacher for Scott County Schools. Colyer shall serve for a term expiring June 30, 2021;
  • David Graham, Bowling Green, represents arts and humanities teachers. He is a teacher for Warren County Schools. Graham shall serve for a term expiring June 30, 2021;
  • Jon Robert Akers, Versailles, represents principals or school administrators. He is the principal at Woodford County High School. Akers shall serve for a term expiring June 30, 2021;
  • Sarah Lynn Burnett, Somerset, represents science, engineering, math, or technology teachers. She is a teacher for Pulaski County Schools. Burnett shall serve for a term expiring June 30, 2021;
  • Daniel Morgan, Louisville, represents secondary school teachers. He is a teacher in Jefferson County Public Schools. Morgan shall serve for a term expiring June 30, 2020;
  • Tracy Voils Adams, Russell Springs, represents exceptional education teachers. She is a teacher for Russell County Schools. Adams shall serve for a term expiring June 30, 2020;
  • Dustin Eric Phelps, Somerset, representing school counselors or psychologists. He is a psychologist for Pulaski County Schools. Phelps shall serve for a term expiring June 30, 2020;
  • Donna Rice Hedgepath, Campbellsville, represents members of a private postsecondary institution. She is vice president for academic affairs for Campbellsville University. Hedgepath shall serve for a term expiring June 30, 2020;
  • Sherry Wilson Powers, Lexington, represents members of a public postsecondary institution. She is dean of the College of Education at Eastern Kentucky University. Powers shall serve for a term expiring June 30, 2019;
  • Katherine Ann Gornik, Lexington, represents members at-large. Gornik is co-founder and former president of THIEL Audio, and chairman of Newton’s Attic, a non-profit educational organization. Gornik shall serve for a term expiring June 30, 2019; and
  • Steven Robert Thomas, Campbellsville, represents career and technical education. Thomas is an area technology center teacher in Allen County Schools. Thomas shall serve for a term expiring June 30, 2019.
  • Tolya Lynn Ellis, Shelbyville, represents elementary teachers. She is a teacher for Shelby County Public Schools. Ellis shall serve for a term expiring June 30, 2019.
  • Shad Michael Sletto, Ft. Mitchell, represents the School Curriculum, Assessment and Accountability Council. He is a workforce representative and a director at EGC Construction Corporation. Sletto shall serve for a term expiring June 30, 2019.

Council Members Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13) and Madonna Flood (D-24) are encouraging pet owners to take advantage of a special event on Saturday, June 10th that will offer one stop services for your pet. “We have put together an event where you can have your pet microchipped, licensed, or vaccinated. It all is available in one location and at low cost,” says Welch. “If you have been putting off updating your pet’s licenses and vaccinations this would be a perfect time to get that done.”

Both Councilwomen are sponsoring the event which will take place at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge #2173 at 201 Outer Loop. The event will be held from 9:00am to 12:00pm. “We encourage every pet owner to take advantage of this event and save a little money while being a responsible pet owner,” says Flood. “We want to make sure everyone, including our furry friends, are safe in our neighborhoods.”

With its new logo and tagline — Uniquely Kentucky. Uniquely Fun. — the Kentucky State Fair is encouraging Kentuckians to enter this year’s competitions for best apple pie, best homebrew IPA beer, best hand-pieced quilt and more.

“The Kentucky State Fair celebrates the best of the Bluegrass State,” said President and CEO Jason Rittenberry. “That not only includes its rich history and culture, but also its people and their unique talents. I invite everyone to consider submitting an entry and sharing their accomplishments with the 600,000 fairgoers this August.”

Competitors can choose from 32 departments — including antiques, field seed, livestock, photography and textiles — which are divided into 7,000 total classes of competition. All ages are welcome to compete for cash prizes and the more than 5,000 blue ribbons to be awarded. In fact, records show competitors have range in age from 4 to 92 years.

The Kentucky State Fair draws entries from across the country, with 18 different states represented in 2016 alone. The KFC Yum! Center, in partnership with the YMCA of Greater Louisville, will host “Fit Tuesday” exercise classes on the arena’s Norton Healthcare Plaza every Tuesday evening at 5:45PM from June 6-August 29. No classed will be held July 4 or 11. The 45-50 minute complimentary classes will be taught by certified fitness instructors from the YMCA and are open to people of all ages and fitness levels. Advance registration is not required and participants do not need to bring any equipment, though an exercise mat, water bottle and sweat towel are recommended for most classes.

iHeart Media’s 100.5 Kiss-FM will play music for each class, conduct prize giveaways and give guests a chance to meet their favorite on-air radio personalities.

With school out and temperatures getting warmer, Councilwoman Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13) is once again sponsoring FREE Family Swim Nights at the Fairdale Pool beginning on Thursday, June 8th.

“With busy schedules and parents working, sometimes families just don’t have the chance to have some fun during the week,” says Welch. “Cooling off at the pool is a great way to spend quality time together, and I am glad to be able to offer this free event at one of the best pools in Metro Louisville.”

The Fairdale Pool is located at Hornbeck Park 709 Fairdale Road.  The FREE Family Swim Nights will be offered on Thursdays from June 8th to July 27th. The hours of operation for this special event are 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

Regular pool hours are 1:00pm to 6:00pm Tuesday through Sunday.

Admission is free but parents or guardians must be with their children at all times during the event. No drop offs are allowed. Proper swimwear is required.

“I want to invite everyone to come out have some fun and maybe get in a little exercise,” says Welch. “I want to make sure everyone gets a chance to enjoy the summer.”
