Honest tea recently conducted an experiment in which they traveled to 60 different cities throughout the 50 states, setting up an unmanned kiosk offering $1 bottles of their beverages, asking customers to operate on the honor system. The results were compiled into the “National Honesty Index“.
At each kiosk, they gathered information about the number of people who paid (or not) in addition to observable characteristics of kiosk visitors. The experiment also included an online component meant to test the honesty of people on the Internet through a Facebook application, where people were offered a coupon in exchange for sharing an inspirational quote on their timeline. In total, the experiment involved over 28,000 participants.
Honolulu, Hawaii, received top marks for the second year in a row with 100% honesty. Four cities tied for second place with 99% honesty while four others tied for third with 98% honesty. Louisville tied with six other cities for fourth place with 97% honesty at the kiosks.
Overall, Americans were 95% honest, up from 92% last year. Additional results indicate that:

UPDATE: Suspect Sought in Connection with Highway Shooting
A male in his late-40s was treated and released from University Hospital after being shot while driving on the Gene Snyder Freeway Saturday evening.
The victim was driving south on I-265 near Smyrna Parkway in southeast Louisville when he was struck by a bullet from a large caliber handgun that entered the vehicle through the passenger door. The two children in the vehicle with him were not injured.
The man reported that he did not see the shooter. Instead, he said that he just heard a ‘pop’ and then realized that he had been struck.
LMPD searched the area but have, thus far, have been unable to locate any further evidence or witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crimetip Hotline at 574-LMPD (5673).
Police are calling the Saturday night shootings at a Shively Thornton’s convenience store in the 4100 block of Cane Run Rd. a murder-suicide and have released the identities of the victims.
Reports say that Scott Joslin, 45, and his wife, Christina Joslin, 43, exchanged words after arriving separately at the gas station shortly around 11 PM Saturday night. Witnesses claim that Scott waited outside as Christina went into the store. After she emerged from the store, Scott shot her before turning the gun on himself.
Christina died on scene while Scott died Sunday afternoon at University Hospital.
This week the state Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources auctioned off 29 custom firearms and knives purchased by former agriculture commissioner Richie Farmer. Farmer, a former shooting guard from the UK Wildcats’ “Unforgettables” lineup in the early ’90s, is currently serving a 27-month sentence in West Virginia’s Hazelton Federal Prison.
The 13 Remington rifles and 16 Case knives were purchased by Farmer as gifts in 2008 using taxpayer money but he kept them for himself instead. Bidders drove prices well above their retail value as they sought to take home a piece of what has become Kentucky history. The $80 custom knives sold for several hundred dollars each while the rifles, valued around $500, sold for roughly twice that. Farmer’s personal rifle sold for $1,400. The nearly $22,000 raised by the auction will go toward the Boys and Girls urban garden project in west Louisville.
Farmer’s prison sentence stems from a 2013 guilty plea to two of the five federal corruption charges he faced.
Warmer weather means new gardens, the return of birds, baseball season, and door-to-door solicitors. Unfortunately, not all door-to-door solicitors are trying to save you money, some may be out to scam you. According to the AARP, people age 60 and above are at a higher risk to be victims of door-to-door scams. This demographics is at a higher risk because retired people are more likely to be home during the day when solicitors are making their rounds, may be less likely to slam the door in a solicitors face and less likely to report the crime. Door-to-door solicitors offer a variety of goods and services, including magazine subscriptions, food, energy audits, home and property maintenance, and charity donations. The list goes on.
Not all solicitors are up to no good and there are a number of things that residents can do to protect themselves. Many door-to-door scam artists exhibit behavior that can tip you off. Some things you should look for include, but not limited to, the seller becoming aggressive when you say no; asking to use the bathroom or telephone; not offering a receipt for purchases; not charging sales tax for goods or charging a higher-than-normal sales tax. If the solicitor states that the money will be going to a charity, the claim can be verified against a list of all of registered charities maintained by the state Attorney General. The USDA recommends the following guidelines if purchasing meat or other food: ask for a brochure of the company; check to see if the vehicle has refrigeration; check the labels of the meat; ask to see the sales permit; and ask where the meat was inspected.

Louisville Metro Government has updated their online crime map to now show crimes that take place within the city’s parks.
Previously, crimes committed within parks were reported with the location given by GPS coordinates. Unfortunately, however, the crime map accepted only physical address. As a result of this map limitation, crimes in parks were displayed as having occurred in a parking lot at 5th and Liberty streets, the geographic coordinate for “The City of Louisville.”
According to the Metro Government’s news release, this change stems from questions that arose after the recent crimes that started in Waterfront Park and moved into parts of downtown. The city’s maps show Part I FBI crimes — the most serious charges that includes homicides, auto theft, assaults, vandalism and robbery. Although the map now displays crime locations more accurately than they were before upgrade, due to the large area covered by the parks, crimes will show as a single pin at the park’s address. To see all crimes from a given park, users should click on the pin within that park.
