Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) will hold its annual Showcase of Schools this weekend, offering parents and students a convenient opportunity to visit with JCPS staff and representatives of each school and get information about optional, magnet and career programs before deciding which school the student will apply to next year. The first 500 people to attend will receive a backpack filled with school supplies sponsored by Metro United Way.
The Showcase will feature all grades—elementary, middle and high—during the event. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28. The Showcase will be held at the Kentucky Exposition Center, South Wing C, 937 Phillips Lane. The event is relocating temporarily while the Kentucky International Convention Center in downtown Louisville is under renovation.
Representatives from the Optional, Magnet and Advance Programs Office; Student Assignment; Transportation; Parent Teacher Association (PTA); Academies of Louisville and Demographics will also be available to answer questions and explain application procedures to parents.
“JCPS is a district full of outstanding choices for students and families, and we appreciate the opportunity to show our community all of the great options that are available here,” said JCPS Acting Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio. “In addition to the Showcase, JCPS has also produced video tours of every school, which are available on the district’s website and school profile pages. Our goal is to make information about our schools easily accessible to all families and students, so they can make an informed choice about their educational experiences.”
The online registration/application period for the 2018-19 school year opens Monday, Oct. 30.
The regular day-of-event parking rate of $8 per vehicle will apply. For more information on the Showcase, families may call 485-3323. For more information on the online application process, families may call 485-6250.

More than 40 students from the Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) District are among the 16,000 across the country named 2018 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.
Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program were announced today by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. and will compete for scholarships worth about $32 million. Semifinalists from JCPS include students from Ballard, Brown, DuPont Manual, Eastern and Male Traditional High. The students are:
“JCPS continues to produce some of the best and brightest students in the state and country, and the achievements of these talented students today are an example of that,” said JCPS Acting Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio. “I am very proud of what they are accomplishing both in and out of the classroom.”
The students were among approximately 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools who entered the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
To become a finalist, the semifinalist and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.
From the approximately 16,000 semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the finalist level. Finalists will be announced early next year.

JCPS Acting Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio provided additional guidance to our school principals on August 8 regarding the solar eclipse later this month.
Here are the highlights:
If parents are requesting an excused absence to attend the eclipse, an educational enhancement form must be submitted by Friday, August 18. Normally, these forms would be due on August 16, but we are providing two extra days because August 16 is the first day of school. Each school should have forms to provide parents and information about additional student obligations, if required by your school’s School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Council.

The Jefferson County Board of Education announced today that it has issued a request for proposals (RFP) to begin the process of seeking a superintendent for the Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) District.
The previous superintendent of the district, Dr. Donna Hargens, resigned from the position effective July 1, 2017. The district is currently being led by an acting superintendent, Dr. Marty Pollio.
The RFP seeks proposals from firms that could assist the district in a national search for a superintendent. The firm would also be responsible for helping engage the public in feedback and forums during the search. Proposals must be submitted to the district no later than September 6, 2017 at 3 p.m.
“The Jefferson County Board of Education is committed to finding the best person for this position and that means conducting a national search to identify all potential candidates and engaging all stakeholders about what they’d like to see in a future leader,” Board Chair Chris Brady said.
The district also announced the creation of a web page to keep the public aware of search developments and opportunities for engagement. The RFP is available here.
JCPS is the largest public school district in Kentucky and the 28th largest public school district in the United States. The district is home to approximately 101,000 students and has approximately 18,000 employees, including approximately 6,000 teachers.
