In his New York Times best-selling book Believe Me, Eddie Izzard writes with the same candor and insight evident in his comedy to reflect upon a childhood marked by the loss of his mother, boarding school, and alternative sexuality, as well as life in comedy, film, politics, and philanthropy.
Over his thirty-year career, Eddie Izzard has proven himself to be a creative chameleon. In Believe Me, he recounts his dizzying rise from the streets of London to West End theaters, and on to Wembley Arena, Madison Square Garden, and the Hollywood Bowl. With his brand of keenly intelligent and wide-reaching comedy, he has built an extraordinary international fan base that transcends age, gender, and race.

This weekend, Locust Grove will be celebrating 200 years of Jane Austen’s Persuasion during the 10th Annual Jane Austen Festival. The festival starts Friday, July 13th at 6:00 PM with twilight shopping and a special presentation of Persuasion. The festival continues all weekend, opening at 10 AM on both Saturday and Sunday.
The event will feature presentations and workshops about the time period. Everything from cosmetics of the time to making your own herbal tea to how to make your own bound book will be covered over the course of the event. Most workshops cost extra to cover supplies, but if you ever wanted to make your own Evening Kentucky Rose, it will be worth the cost. Patrons of the event will also have the opportunity to attend a Grand Ball on Saturday at the Pendennis Club (tickets sold separately).
Tickets to the event can be purchased online ahead of time or at the admission gate. Festival admission does not sell out, but the workshops and Grand Ball have limited seating and usually sell out. Ticket prices are:
- Friday – $6 per person
- Saturday and Sunday – $15 per person per day, or $25 for both days
- Children under 12 are admitted free with a paid adult.

The entire family is invited to enjoy a day of fun on the banks of the Ohio River as Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing hosts an “Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social,” Sunday, July 8 from 1-5 p.m. The historic property is located at 7410 Moorman Road in southwest Louisville.
The event features live music by Storefront Congregation, and several activities for kids, including games, miniature train rides, pony rides, a farm animal petting zoo and the Southwest Library Book Sale. Visitors will also be able to participate in an archaeological dig underway on the Riverside grounds, take tours of the circa 1837 Farnsley-Moremen House.
A highlight of the event is the Ice Cream Eating contest: ten children and six adults will be selected to compete. Contestants will vie for the “first to finish” award.
Admission to the event is free–and so are the children’s activities. Tours of the historic home are half-price for this event. Food will be provided by Ehrler’s Ice Cream, Lexie Lu’s and the Celtic Pig. As you may know, The Kentucky Center is owned by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Moving forward, our friends and partners at the Commonwealth Finance and Administration Cabinet are working very closely with us on all remediation, restoration efforts, and the schedule for completion of the building project.
The Finance Cabinet is working in coordination with Metro Louisville, The Kentucky Center, Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet and others to work through this process as quickly and efficiently as possible.
We thank Cabinet Secretary William M. Landrum III and his team for their support and leadership during this challenging time. State inspectors are currently conducting the thorough damage assessment necessary to determine the building’s safety.
The time needed to complete that assessment precluded our ability to present PNC Broadway in Louisville’s production of Waitress, scheduled June 26-July 1. This was a tough decision, but PNC Broadway in Louisville president Leslie Broecker understands and supports the decision. All ticket buyers will be issued refunds.
In the coming days, we will be in a better position to determine plans for future performances.
The Center will remain closed to the public for now, but the business of The Center continues.
With The Kentucky Center Foundation’s recent purchase of the Brown Theatre, we now have an alternate space in our family of venues that can accommodate a number of events and performances.
In our nearly 35 year history, The Kentucky Center building has faced other calamities, and always comes back stronger than ever. Just like the proud community we serve, when disaster strikes, we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get back to work.
The dedication of our staff and love from our community reminds us all that The Kentucky Center is more than a building, it is an idea that binds us together through the joy, love and power of the arts.
The wonderful artists and audiences we serve at The Kentucky Center can rest assured we are doing everything in our power to return the building to a fully operational state as quickly and safely as possible.

Please be advised that we were notified by officials at The Kentucky Center that WAITRESS, originally scheduled to play The Kentucky Center June 26-July 1, must be cancelled due to recent fire damage within the venue. As the owner of the building, the Kentucky Finance and Administration Cabinet, working in partnership with officials at The Kentucky Center, decided to close the building for next week’s performance based on initial assessments.
Safety of patrons, staff, and performers is of utmost importance. All purchased tickets will be automatically refunded within the next several weeks.
“It’s regrettable that the presentation of WAITRESS must be cancelled, but safety is a priority”, said Leslie Broecker, President of PNC Broadway in Louisville. “We appreciate all of the hard work that The Kentucky Center staff and contractors have done thus far, but because the venue must have more time to ensure the safety of our patrons, the engagement must be cancelled and we will unfortunately be unable to reschedule or relocate this production.”
“The producers of WAITRESS are appreciative of the efforts put forth by The Kentucky Center and Broadway Across America, but are extremely disappointed not to be able to bring the show to the fantastic audiences in Louisville.”

Mayor Greg Fischer, Metro Councilmembers and officials from Louisville Parks and Recreation helped dedicate a new five-a-side soccer field at Beechmont Community Center in south Louisville today.
Funding for the new soccer field is the result of a partnership between the Louisville Parks Foundation, a non-profit that supports Louisville Parks and Recreation, and Louisville City FC. The outdoor artificial turf field is the first of five planned for local parks in south Louisville.
“Soccer is a growing sport in our community. So when the opportunity presented itself to add this new amenity to parks, with the help of our friends at LouCity, we seized it!,” said Louisville Parks Foundation, CEO, Brooke Pardue. “We hope other individuals and organizations will see the value and help us complete our goal of building four more fields.”
“I’m grateful to Louisville City FC, which is creating a huge buzz around soccer right now in our city, for joining the Parks Foundation to help to create soccer fields in South Louisville where all residents, bound by a love for this sport, can come together,” Mayor Greg Fischer said.
“As our community and team continue to grow, LouCity makes this donation with the future in mind. The community’s youth will be an integral part of both our city and our support one day and we are excited to see this project come to fruition,” said Brad Estes, Executive Vice President of Louisville City FC.
Five-a-side soccer is a variation of soccer, where each team fields five players. Other differences include a smaller pitch, smaller goals and a reduced game duration. Matches are played on artificial grass pitches that may be enclosed within a barrier or “cage” to prevent the ball from leaving the playing area and keep the game flowing.
The $75,000 project was funded by the Louisville Parks Foundation and includes a turf donation from Louisville City FC valued at $45,000. The Louisville Parks Foundation is seeking to raise an additional $383,000 to complete the other four fields.
