AROTRNext year, 2016, will be the final year for Abbey Road On The River in Louisville. Actions from The Galt House Hotel first compelled festival organizers to partner with the Marriott as the host hotel for 2016, but now organizers realize their hard work and efforts are being undermined by The Galt House, and that the hotel on Main Street thinks that somehow Abbey Road on The River is theirs.

“The festival does not belong to the Galt House,” says Gary Jacob, founder and organizer of Abbey Road on the River. “It’s ours, and so we will spend the next year either finding someone in Louisville who wants to buy Abbey Road On The River, or we will find a new city and a hotel up the 1-71 corridor where the hotel (to which we bring millions of dollars in travel business to) does not do things that are harmful to the festival just because they think they can.”

Organizers have informed all of their major partners – Wave 3 News, The Louisville Convention and Visitors Bureau, and The Muhammad Ali Center – and while all wish it was different, they all understand why this decision is being made. Life is too short to be a neighbor with a business who covets your business so much they will stoop to any level to take it. 2016 will be a blowout…festival organizers promise to make it the best farewell party the city will ever imagine!

Event designed to give an overview of South Louisville for Leadership Louisville center alumni and independent business owners

Keep South Louisville WeirdLIBA is partnering with the Leadership Louisville Center with support from the Dixie Area and South Louisville Business Associations to present the Meet South Louisville Bus Tour, highlighting many of the significant and unique things happening in this area of Louisville. The bus tour will be held on Wednesday, April 1st and start at with a light breakfast at the University Club before departure, then cover points of interest like the Iroquois Amphitheater/Colonial Gardens, Fairdale Roundabout and many more along the way, with a stop at the breathtaking new Southwest Louisville Regional Library. (The bus tour will adjourn back at the University Club at 11am.)

In May of 2013, the Louisville Independent Business Alliance teamed up with Metro government, leaders from the Southwest Dream Team and other area groups to launch the ‘keep South Louisville weird’ campaign, which is much more than a slogan. The group has conducted and analyzed studies, gathered facts, and started education efforts so that area residents know why it’s important to support independent businesses.

South Louisville residents and council members have expressed interest in having more independent businesses, citing the proportion of chain businesses to independents. Presenters for this tour will include Councilmen Rick Blackwell and David Yates, Barbara Nichols of the South Louisville Business Association, Vince Jarboe of the Southwest Dream Team,  Bennett Knox of the South Points Scenic Area and Jefferson Memorial Forest, June Meredith of the Dixie Area Business Association, Rebecca Maddox of the Southwest Regional Library and Jennifer Rubenstein of LIBA.

Weird Birthday Bash to be held Friday, February 27th

LIBAThe Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA) was officially formed in 2005. Former owner of Ear X-tacy and LIBA’s Founder John Timmons and a handful of fellow business owners created the organization after the community’s intrigued reaction to his Bardstown Road billboard that read “Keep Louisville Weird.” Ten years later, LIBA now represents nearly 700 independently owned businesses who support its message about the importance of buying local.

To celebrate 10 Years of Keeping Louisville Weird, LIBA will host a Weird Birthday Bash, presented by Quest Outdoors, on Friday, February 27th from 7:00pm-11:00pm at Headliners Music Hall, 1386 Lexington Road. The event will include music by Hay DJ and Tony and the Tan Lines, a cash bar, prizes, and party games such as “Pin the Mustache on the Mayor.” Attendees will also get to taste several birthday cakes and vote for their favorite in the “Weird Birthday Cake Contest” where local bakeries will submit their unique creations made especially for this event. Tickets are available for $10 at Better Days Records, Headliners box office, or online at www.keeplouisvilleweird.com. Continue reading
