The popular Tom Owen CycLOUvia returns to Bardstown Road on Sunday, Oct. 20. The popular event showcases alternative transit and is named in honor of former District 8 Councilman Tom Owen, a lifelong advocate for bicycles and pedestrians in our community.
The event route is shortened this year due to budget constraints. The road will be closed to vehicular traffic along Bardstown Road from Douglass Boulevard to Highland Avenue from 2 to 6 p.m. Police will facilitate motor crossings at Grinstead Drive and Eastern Parkway.
“This fun event brings people of all ages and backgrounds together to promote healthy habits, sustainable modes of transit, and safety,” said Mayor Greg Fischer. “CycLOUvia also gives residents the opportunity to celebrate the small businesses along a car-free Bardstown Road.”
Commercial establishments with frontage along the Bardstown Road corridor are encouraged to open their businesses during event hours and to engage participants.
During CycLOUvia, streets are opened to people of all ages, abilities, and socio-economic backgrounds looking to improve their mental, physical, and emotional health.
Since 2012, CycLOUvia events have attracted tens of thousands of people to neighborhoods across the city. CycLOUvia promotes healthy lifestyles, alternative transportation, safety, and economic development.

The CycLOUvia on Bardstown Road is named in honor of former District 8 Councilman Tom Owen, a lifelong advocate for bicycles and pedestrians in our community.
Bardstown Road from Douglass Boulevard to Broadway will be closed to vehicular traffic from 2-6 p.m. Police will facilitate motor crossings at Grinstead Drive and Eastern Parkway. Many businesses along the corridor will be open and engaging pedestrians with special events.
“CycLOUvia has become a favorite event for all ages to enjoy a car-free, dense, urban corridor,” Mayor Greg Fischer said. “Bring your bikes, skateboards and walking shoes while enjoying everything our small businesses have to offer.”
The return to the Highlands marks the fifteenth CycLOUvia event and seventh on Bardstown Road. Previous events have been held on Frankfort Avenue, West Broadway and in Three Points (Germantown, Schnitzelburg and Shelby Park).

2018’s second CycLOUvia, the popular event showcasing alternative transportation, is returning to Three Points—Germantown, Schnitzelburg, and Shelby Park—on Sunday, August 19, Mayor Fischer announced.
To support and highlight the growing business activity on Logan Street, the route will stretch on Goss Avenue and Logan Street from Texas Avenue to Kentucky Street.
“Another CycLOUvia is another reason to enjoy exercise, alternative transportation and community,” Fischer said. “I encourage neighbors along this route to bring their bicycles, skateboards and walking shoes to Goss and Logan streets, participate in this event and support local businesses.”

Frankfort Avenue from Pope Street to Stilz Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic from 2-6 p.m. Police will facilitate a motor crossing at Ewing Avenue. Many businesses along the corridor will be open and engaging the street with specials for the event.
“On a gorgeous Louisville summer day, CycLOUvia is a great event to get outside and spend time with friends and family in the street on your bikes,” Mayor Greg Fischer said. “Join us on Frankfort Avenue and don’t forget to support the thriving small businesses while you are there.”

In an effort to show how easy it is to get around on a bike or on foot on one of Metro Louisville’s most popular streets, Frankfort Avenue will become a paved park for the next CycLOUvia event set for Sunday, June 11th.
“CycLOUvia is a great opportunity to remind ourselves that we can live without our cars from time to time and still traverse our neighborhoods,” says Councilman Bill Hollander (D-9). “Fortunately, more people are becoming aware of that fact, which makes our citizens healthier and our neighborhoods greener.”
CycLOUvia will take place between Pope Street and Stilz Avenue between 2:00pm and 6:00pm with cross traffic allowed at Ewing Avenue. During that time, no cars will be allowed and bicycles, pedestrians, skaters, and strollers will take over The Avenue.
The Crescent Hill Library will be open from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. during this special event, with staff paid for by the Citizens of District 9. Many businesses along The Avenue till have special offerings.

CycLOUvia makes an exciting return this coming Saturday, May 13th, to three Metro Louisville neighborhoods and Council Members Pat Mulvihill (D-10) and Barbara Sexton Smith (D-4) are encouraging people to come out and have fun.
“Germantown, Schnitzelburg and Shelby Park are three areas with a rich history and great people who live and work there,” says Mulvihill. “CycLOUvia is a great way for these neighbors to come out, ride their bike or walk around and get to know the area. Folks come out, have fun and discover some of the exciting businesses located there, both old and new.”
This is will be the 10th CycLOUvia and this time the Three Points area, that is bounded by Goss Avenue, Logan Street and Shelby Street will be closed to motorized vehicles. It will afford pedestrians, bikers, skaters, joggers and dancers to come out and enjoy the afternoon.
“I think this is a great way for people to get out and enjoy a great Saturday in May and it is also an opportunity for other folks outside the Three Points area to come and enjoy the down to earth nature of these three neighborhoods,” says Sexton Smith.
CycLOUvia was created by Mayor Greg Fischer back in 2012 as a new part of the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement.
During the 10th CycLOUvia the streets will be closed from 2:00pm to 6:00pm.

2017’s first CycLOUvia, the popular event showcasing alternative transportation, is returning to Three Points—Germantown, Schnitzelburg, and Shelby Park—on Saturday, May 13, Mayor Fischer announced last week.
The upcoming installment of CycLOUvia will move in a circular route through the Germantown, Schnitzelburg and Shelby Park neighborhoods, also known as Three Points, via Goss Avenue, Logan Street and Shelby Street.
“I am very happy to start another year of CycLOUvia,” Fischer said. “This unique event closes the streets to cars but opens them for fellowship and fun. I encourage young and old to ride and walk down our neighborhood streets and enjoy the small businesses that line them.”

This edition of CycLOUvia will take place during Better Blocks, a temporary intervention at Oak and Logan Streets that will create walkable destinations and stronger street design. Pop-up shops, vendors, public space, art, and programming are utilized to reinvigorate the neighborhood corridor.
“Center For Neighborhoods is excited to be partnering with Louisville Forward as Cyclouvia returns to Three Points,” Tom Stephens, Executive Director of Center for Neighborhoods, said. “Designed with Shelby Park residents, Better Block Shelby Park will activate Logan and Oak Streets with temporary streetscape improvements, public spaces, community entertainment, and activities – including CycLOUvia – to highlight the current and future possibilities for the residents and businesses in Shelby Park.”
