In observance of November 14 as World Diabetes Day, a coalition of local health agencies is encouraging everyone to complete a new online screening tool to find out if they may have diabetes or prediabetes. Anyone scoring high on the screening will be directed to resources and providers for follow-up testing and care.

People can access the quick, simple 7-question screening at http://www.gohealthshare.com.  The screening takes less than three minutes to complete. Those with a score of five or higher may be at risk for diabetes or prediabetes.  The screening will direct them to contact Metro United Way 211, where they will be referred to a provider for further testing and treatment.

Organizations participating in the coalition include the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, the Kentuckiana Health Collaborative, Metro United Way, the YMCA of Greater Louisville, the Kentuckiana Regional Planning & Development Agency (KIPDA), Norton Office of Faith and Health Ministries and U of L Physicians.

Diabetes is the seventh leading killer in Kentucky. Yet, nearly one out of every three people in Kentucky who has diabetes doesn’t know they have it, and nine out of every 10 people with prediabetes doesn’t know they have it.

Undiagnosed diabetes can lead to very serious health consequences – the amputation of limbs, sores that don’t heal, heart attack and even death.  Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults. Diagnosed early, however, it can be managed and the person can lead a long productive life.  Similarly, if a person has prediabetes, lifestyle changes and monitoring can help to prevent the condition from developing into full-scale diabetes.

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has a certified diabetes educator and free classes to help those with diabetes manage it successfully.  Contact us at 502.574.6663.

The North American International Livestock Expo (NAILE) still has nearly a week of agricultural showmanship left, but tonight marks the last night for the associated 2017 Great Lakes Circuit Finals of the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).

From barrel racing and roping to the rough stock events of bronco and bull riding, the North American Championship Rodeo brings fast paced action to freedom hall as dozens of cowboys and cowgirls compete for a purse of tens of thousands of dollars in prize money.  The action kicks off at 7:30 PM in Freedom Hall.

The first two nights of go ’rounds are wrapped up and now the competitors seek to lock in the glory and prizes of finishing at the top of the list among the seven main events, which include bareback bronco riding, team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, tie down roping, barrel racing, and the thrilling crowd pleaser – bull riding.

The event isn’t just roping and riding either.  Throughout the competition, the crowd is entertained with numerous acts such as the “The Most Recognized Cowboy in the World,” Whiplash the Cowboy Monkey, the illuminating equestrian riding show from the Red Rock Riders Drill Team, and the comedy routines of the PRCA rodeo clown.

Tonight’s event also features two special promotions.  To mark Veterans Day, in honor of those who have served our country, active military members, veterans and first responders will receive 50% off of their admission.  Tonight is also Kid’s Cowboy Hat Night – the first 500 children in the lobby of Freedom Hall after 6PM will receive a free straw cowboy hat.

You won’t want to miss this action packed evening at Freedom Hall!

Monday, November 13, will be Wear Purple Day in Louisville to support Louisville City FC ahead of the USL championship game, Mayor Fischer said

via a city proclamation.

“Louisville City FC is on the cusp of a championship — an epic accomplishment for such a young team,” Mayor Fischer said. “I’m asking citizens to show their appreciation and support by wearing Louisville City purple on Monday, and to head to Slugger Field to cheer the players on as they bring the USL Cup home to Louisville.”

Louisville City plays for its first USL Cup championship at 9 p.m. Monday at Slugger Field against the Swope Park Rangers.

Mayor Fischer also announced that the Big Four Bridge will be lit in purple this weekend and Monday ahead of the USL championship game.

The Mayor and Louisville City FC are hosting a pep rally at 4 p.m. this Friday at Fourth Street Live. The public is invited to cheer on the players, coaches, staff and owners.

Registration is now open for Tomorrow’s Talent, a workforce and education summit that brings together national and local experts to focus on ways for young people to realize their full potential in education and the workforce — creating the maximum impact to the regional economy.

The event is from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at the Muhammad Ali Center. Registration is free.

Tomorrow’s Talent is presented by KentuckianaWorks, 55,000 Degrees and Greater Louisville Inc., with funding from the JPMorgan Chase Foundation and UPS.

The keynote speaker will be Richard V. Reeves of the Brookings Institution, where he is Senior Fellow, Economic Studies and Co-Director of the Center on Children and Families. His research focuses on social mobility, inequality, and family change. Prior to joining Brookings in 2013, he was director of strategy to the UK’s Deputy Prime Minister.

Reeves’ latest book is Dream Hoarders: How the American Upper Middle Class Is Leaving Everyone Else in the Dust, Why That Is a Problem, and What to Do about It.
In September 2017, Politico magazine named Reeves one of the top 50 thinkers in the U.S. for his work on class and inequality.

Additional breakout sessions, lightning talks and TED-style presentations will feature an eclectic lineup of presenters and topics.

Mayor Greg Fischer, who has launched initiatives such as Cradle to Career and the SummerWorks jobs program to maximize youth achievement, will attend and present.

Light refreshments begin at 8 a.m., and lunch will be provided.

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) high school girls will learn about empowerment and positive choices during the 2017 Youth Services Centers Women of Worth: I Am Resilient Conference, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, in Hartford Hall at the Jefferson Community & Technical College (JCTC) Downtown Campus (649 S. 1st Street).

Approximately 300 students from a variety of JCPS high schools will enjoy sessions about goal setting, college readiness, healthy relationships and resilience. Sadiqa Reynolds, CEO and President of the Louisville Urban League, will serve as the keynote speaker.

The conference mission is to empower and motivate young women to make positive choices that will strengthen their life skills, help them overcome barriers and guide them in achieving academic success. The conference is sponsored by several JCPS Youth Services Centers, Norton Children’s Hospital and JCTC.
